Cybersecurity in India: Addressing the Challenges of Cyber Attacks with AI

AI has increased the potency of fraud detection, anti-malware, and network security software by identifying abnormalities more quickly than the human brain. But like any other technical development, AI comes with a great deal of danger and presents a wide range of difficult cybersecurity issues. Brute force, denial of service, deepfakes created by AI, and social engineering are the main cyber threats that use AI.

Nearly every industry in the world is now being shaped by artificial intelligence, and this trend is only becoming bigger. Thanks to constant advancements, this state-of-the-art technology has transformed every industry, impacting its operations and procedures.

The development of artificial intelligence and its quick engagement in the cybersecurity industry, along with its potential and limitations, are hot topics in an era of increasingly sophisticated criminality.

The evolving cyber threat landscape

It's astonishing how much potential well-known AI technologies like ChatGPT, Bard, and others are gaining. These technologies' generative powers can improve customer service, support decision-making, and encourage innovation, among many other things. Although these AI-powered technologies are beneficial to people, there is a risk that cybercriminals could manipulate them, leading to risks that could seriously harm or disrupt corporate systems.

Since its release, fraudsters have been using ChatGPT and other generative AI tools extensively to create believable phishing messages and more sophisticated attacks that are difficult for naive users to thwart with conventional defenses. Cybersecurity companies have seen the trends and are utilizing cutting-edge solutions to mitigate the threats.

The increase in Indian cyberattacks

This kind of automation has become essential for data security due to the sharp rise in everyday risks. According to a recent investigation by cybersecurity firm Group-IB, 12,632 stolen credentials have been reported from India alone, out of about 100,000 compromised ChatGPT accounts whose data is being unlawfully sold on the dark web.

The hazards related to cybersecurity linked with AI tools may rise as they become more affordable and widely available. According to research data, during the first quarter of 2023, India experienced an 18% rise in average weekly attacks compared to the same period in 2022. Every organization was subject to a minimum of 2,108 weekly attacks. All the same, nine out of ten websites experienced a bot assault in the second quarter, up 48 percent from the first, according to the State of Application Security Q2 report from an application security software-as-a-service provider.

The industry is working to create a variety of software quality testing solutions that can detect and take use of abnormalities in order to protect against such risks. Attackers do, however, have methods for abusing this technology. One such program that gained popularity among hackers is Metasploit, a computer security project that provides information on security flaws.

Even if there are more cyberattacks now than ever before, cybersecurity's ability to stop them has also grown stronger. The Indusface report reveals that, out of 1.1 billion cyberattacks worldwide, over 947 million were thwarted in India during the second quarter of 2023. This is despite a sharp 90% increase in the frequency of cyberattacks against Indian websites during the second quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter, which saw 500 million attacks.

Accepting a safer tomorrow

Notwithstanding any risks, AI is anticipated to improve cybersecurity and help businesses create more robust security protocols. Businesses, legislators, and AI developers must work together to devise solutions for cybersecurity issues. By establishing a strong legislative framework that can disseminate optimal cybersecurity practices, policymakers play a crucial role. Companies can make investments in building strong cybersecurity defenses and provide their staff with threat management training. They can enhance response times and promptly detect risks by implementing AI techniques. Creating systems that are durable and strong against abuse by developers is another creative strategy to counter the cyber threat.

As AI becomes more and more integrated into our daily lives, we need to improve cybersecurity measures to guarantee the safety of our cyberspace. Its opportunities are as vast as the perils. Thus, it is essential to use a harness in a responsible and safe manner.
